Ji En is a dispute resolution lawyer based in Singapore. His practice is focused on commercial litigation, international arbitration and alternative disputes resolution.

Prior to joining Ascendant Legal, Ji En spent two and a half years at a local disputes firm which provided him with extensive advocacy experience in both civil and criminal disputes resolution. During that period, he argued in the Singapore High Court and Court of Appeal, and worked with leading Queen’s Counsel on various complex and high profile matters.

Ji En is also one of the leaders in the legaltech and legal innovation scene in Asia-Pacific. He is the Deputy Chair of the Asia-Pacific Legal Innovation and Technology Association, and he speaks regularly on issues related to technology and innovation in law. He also sits on the Working Group formed by the Singapore Computer Society and Singapore Academy of Law to help the Singapore government develop strategies for the legal workforce in view of technological disruption in the industry.

Ji En graduated on the ASEAN Scholarship with a Second Upper Class Honours (L.L.B. Honours) from the National University of Singapore in 2017, and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2018. He is fluent in English, Chinese, Cantonese and Hokkien, and is proficient in Malay.

Representative experience:

  • Acted as lead counsel and argued against a Senior Counsel from the Attorney-General’s Chambers in a judicial review application on the seizure of items belonging to a client who was being extradited to Australia. He successfully obtained leave for judicial review before Justice Valerie Thean in the Singapore High Court.
  • Assisted Roderick Cordara QC in an SIAC arbitration relating to a contractual dispute over commissions for the world finals of an international fashion modelling competition.
  • Assisted in a Singapore High Court action for the setting aside of an SIAC arbitration award.
  • Assisted in a minority oppression matter involving clients from Singapore and Thailand, who were shareholders of a multi-million dollar private company in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.
  • Assisted in a matter involving a high net-worth individual who was removed as a permanent governing director of a family holding company when she became bankrupt. We successfully obtained an order for our client to be automatically reinstated as a permanent governing director of the company upon the setting aside the bankruptcy order. The judgment is reported as [2018] 4 SLR 293, and it is the leading authority on the effects of setting aside a bankruptcy order in the context of directorship.
  • Acted pro bono for a Malaysian on death row for drug trafficking in Singapore, and successfully obtained a temporary stay of execution in the Singapore Court of Appeal.
  • Acted for the accused person charged with defrauding the IRAS of about $12 million using the Productivity and Innovation Credit Scheme, and involving over 200 entities, hundreds of claims and complicated funds-flows.
  • Acted for the accused persons charged with defrauding the Skillsfuture Singapore of almost $40 million.
