Ascendant Legal today announced that Edgar Chin has joined the Singapore law practice as director. This addition will further bolster the dispute resolution capabilities of Norton Rose Fulbright in Singapore, as the global law firm established a formal law alliance – Norton Rose Fulbright Ascendant – with Ascendant Legal in 2018.
Edgar joins Ascendant Legal from Singapore law firm Incisive Law LLC, where he was most recently the joint managing director and head of its litigation practice. Incisive Law operates in a formal law alliance with international practice Ince.
Edgar focuses on contentious matters in relation to the shipping, international trade and commercial sectors. He represents clients on a wide variety of litigation and arbitration matters, including admiralty and maritime disputes. Edgar regularly appears as lead counsel before Singapore Courts, as well as in arbitrations, including under the SIAC, LCIA and ICDR.
Praised by clients for his ‘deep sector knowledge and strong team leadership’ in Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2018, Edgar also regularly advises clients on general contracts, charterparties, bills of lading as well as environmental, licensing, regulatory and employment issues.
Honoured as a Senior Accredited Specialist in Maritime and Shipping Law by the Singapore Academy of Law earlier this year, Edgar has extensive and practical experience in the Protection and Indemnity (P&I) industry, having been a Claims Director at Standard Asia, a specialist marine and energy insurer that is part of the International Group of Protection and Indemnity Clubs.
Chew Kei-Jin, Managing Director of Ascendant Legal, commented:
“Edgar possesses experience in the maritime and commercial disputes space which complements our practice perfectly. Edgar’s well-entrenched knowledge of the P&I industry will broaden our sector offering to existing clients and create opportunities for new clients.”
Yu-En Ong, head of Norton Rose Fulbright’s Singapore office, commented:
“We are pleased to welcome Edgar to Norton Rose Fulbright Ascendant. He will work closely with our disputes and transactional teams in Singapore, as we deliver the very best shipping, international trade and dispute resolution support to our clients.”
